The Story Behind Calmii™

Why I Created Calmii™

Calmii™ began with a very simple idea.

I was trying to find a practical way to store my son’s talk tags — something contained, organised, and easy for us to access. I started thinking about a small box, something tactile and reassuring rather than another visual or screen-based aid.

And then something clicked.

It made me stop and think about how often communication becomes difficult during moments of overwhelm — not because support tools don’t exist, but because many of them ask for too much. Too many words. Too much stimulation. Too much pressure.

I couldn’t find something that felt calm enough.
So I started designing one.

What followed was a process shaped entirely by lived experience. Calmii™ evolved from that initial idea into a handheld tactile communication bar — intentionally simple, quiet, and respectful. A tool designed to support understanding when words feel hard, without demanding attention or creating stimulation.

Every detail of Calmii™ has been carefully considered:
the size, the textures, the colours, and the way it is used. It is not designed to distract or entertain. It is designed to support calm, choice, and connection.

Calmii™ is not about fixing behaviour or forcing communication. It exists to offer an alternative — a low-demand way for children to express needs or feelings when speech isn’t accessible in that moment.

Developed by a parent and shaped through real-world use, Calmii™ is now used by families and educators as a tactile communication support tool in homes, schools, and SEND settings.

What began as an idea for a small box has become something much more meaningful. My hope is that Calmii™ supports other  SEND families in the same way it has supported ours — gently, quietly, and without pressure.

Thank you for being part of the Calmii™ journey.
